Newpaper Advert history

Newspapers adverts have been used in publications since the late 1830s, 70/80% of of newspapers revenue comes from advertising. The main idea behind newspapers allowing there publication was so that as they were getting a lot of revenue from advertising so they could lower there prices which means it increases the customer base.

This is a newspaper advert from the late 1830s/1900s as you can see it is very basic, it says exactly what it is advertising 'AMERICAN CIRCUS' it doesn't have any gimmicks, slogans etc. You can see that is has been drawn and then printed as you can see the strokes from a pen, even after it has been printed.

You wouldn't see an advert like this in this age, as you can see it is very old and outdated and today's consumer is a lot more demanding and need catchy slogans and images for them to show any interest, if there was an advertisement like this in a publication nowadays it would get no audience.

By the 1930s printed images were changed to black and white photos, this was only possible due to technological advances in the production of photographs, this made it cheaper for newspaper companies to use.

Advances in advertisements were also made as people started adding more text like catchy slogans, to catch more people attention to increase their customer base and it also gave more to look at instead of basic one picture and one piece of text.

By the 21st century newspaper adverts started to decline in National newspapers due to advances in the Internet and TV channels such as Sky and ITV and there websites, convergence played a big part as they could get to there consumer base a lot easier. Smaller companies such as The Metro and Express and Star still use newspaper advertising as major a income to keep the paper running. The most common advertisements to be found in these newspapers are more likely to be blockbusters in cinemas or exclusive television shows.
